Ankylosing Spondylitis and Physiotherapy

Inflammation often begins at the lower back bone and at the sacrum-iliac joint. Often patients will complain of persistent and chronic pain and rigidity in the joints of the lower back and hip. Usually a patient will have the above symptoms especially after a bout of rest or non-movement.

The concept of Health is somewhat difficult to understand. When we say a person is healthy, it means to the lay man that the person is normally doing his activities and does not outwardly show any signs of any disease in him. However, for the medical man it denotes the conformity to certain standards like physical measurements, biochemical norms and rates, physiological standards, etc. Even these standards vary with race, rest, exercise, food, habits, starvation, climate, altitude, latitude, etc. It has been extremely difficult for scientists concerned with human biology to lay definite criteria for health and define the term Health in a specific manner.

From the history of medicine we know that there have been various systems of medicine or healing arts evolved in different parts of the world during different civilizations. But in no system has there been a clear-cut definition of health.

In the oxford dictionary health means the state of being free from sickness, injury or disease, bodily conditions; something indicating good bodily condition. A few decades ago this meaning was conveyed in the definition of health but recently the World Health Organization have considered it necessary to give a direction towards the achievement of a robust and happy and active bodily and mental condition capable of continuous productive ability and, therefore, have defined health as follows:

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity.” (WHO — 1948) it will be seen that even after having this definition it will be difficult to conceptualize and standard positive health with specific clear-cut attributes and criteria for measurement. A person may be enjoying mental equity and enthusiasm for doing anything. He may also be physically able to do any amount of work, but he may be having some minor dysfunction or deficiency or even a mild infection causing a very minor disturbance which even does not upset his normal activities.

For example, Hyper pigmentation on the skin or lack of pigmentation on the skin; angular stomatitis due to B complex deficiency; a ring-worm patch on the skin, etc. In these conditions strictly speaking the person can not be called 'health' but for outward purpose he will appear healthy and he will also be fully active. Similarly, under the mental component there are ever so many stresses and strains that an individual is exposed to and depending on his own mental make-up he is either able to overcome the strain or sufferers from worry and depression. If in spite of his worry he is able to function normally others may take him to be healthy, where the worry may normally be making him mentally unsound.

Social well-being is very much related to the mental adjustment of the individual to others around him in the family or in the community. Sometimes it may so happen that a person may find it had to adjust with his group and may, therefore, be under a mental strain. But he may be doing his work normally from which others would judge him to be healthy. It is only if he reaches a break-point and behaves either in a withdrawal manner or becomes aggressive that his mental condition will become manifest to be seen and experienced by others.

We have, therefore, to understand that the term health is not an abstract thing but a relative concept. In it we see a continuum of freedom from sickness to better health and positive health. When we say positive health we refer to a condition in which the body has sufficient reserve nutrition and resistant factors to prevent the invasion of the body by any micro-organism or by the deprivation of any nutritional factors causing a deficiency pathology and, therefore, completely free from disease.

Disease is a little less difficult to define than Health. It denotes the condition of the human body in which something has gone wrong and has upset the Norman functions of the body including the mind. As in health there is also a continuum from a predisposition or premonition of illness which may or may not be experienced or not even aware by the individual concerned, to a definite condition of illness diagnosed by signs or symptoms and impairment of body functions.

This continuum may further extend from mildness to severe sickness and death or recovery from sickness back to a debilitated condition and later to a normal condition.

As has been pointed out in the previous paragraphs the normally of health of person may shift towards positive health dependent on the improvement of health by wholesome food, wholesome water proper living conditions, proper work atmosphere, good personal hygiene, etc., or the deterioration of health due to faulty or inadequate food, infection through food, water or air, skin or due to external injuries, accident etc.

For maintenance of good health the following things are essential:

1. Adequate quantities of proper nutrition
2. Adequate quantities of safe drinking water
3. Proper shelter with adequate ventilation and lighting
4. Proper clothing
5. Proper work, exercise and rest and recreation
6. Proper social conditions for a harmonious existence and work
7. Proper security from fear of any kind
8. Proper sexual behavior
9. Personal hygiene
10. Provision and utilization of health services.

Disease can be due to say one or more of the following causes:

1. Genetic hits
2. Congenital deformity or malformation
3. Cancer
4. Malnutrition
5. Poisons

The economic factors may be the cause for non-accessibility and the social factors may be the cause of waste of nutrition even after the food stuffs are available or on the contrary over eating and addiction to alcohol, etc., causing metabolic disorder. The human and social factors are very predominant determinants in any society or community. Knee Popping Explained

Knee popping and associated pain is an extremely common problem experienced by many and there are many possible causes for it. Typically, knee popping is because the knee cap is loose. This can result from injury or aging related wear and tear issues. Weak quadriceps muscles can also contribute to this knee popping phenomenon as it is adequate to support the expansion and contraction motion of the knee.

Bubbles

Painless popping is usually due to the presence of bubbles in the joints. Bubbles are formed when there is a difference in pressure at the joint, allowing for the spontaneous formation of tiny air bubbles. When movements are attempted, the bubbles will be burst and then emitting a popping sound. This is going to be a closed cycle since bubbles will continue to form due to the pressure difference. The scientific term for it is called cavitation and this is harmless.

Ligaments stretching

We have soft tissues located throughout our joints and movements will cause these tendons and ligaments to stretch slightly. Since they are elastic, they will return back to their original shape after the load is released and this will produce a popping sound, similar to the analogy of a rubber band stretching. This does not cause any soft tissue damage and is harmless.

Mechanical popping

Mechanical popping is due to the presence of an existing injury, commonly a loose cartilage. As the loose cartilage is free to move in the joint, it will cause a flapping movement when the leg is moving, causing a popping sound. Since it is due to injury, medical attention will need to be bought to repair the loose cartilage.

Arthritis

Arthritis is effectively wear and tear and it causes the cartilage to get thinner and thinner. As the cartilage gets thinner and friction occurs during movement, both surfaces will rub against each other, resulting in a popping sound. It can also be quite painful for some patients to bear.

Deep breathing is an important skill that can be used for coping. It may sound like a joke but it is a known fact that not a lot of people breathe properly. How Do I Do It?

There are really no fancy techniques when it comes to deep breathing. The main idea is to just increase your oxygen intake so that you can induce the relaxation response of your body. Here's how you can do it.

1.) Choose a position that is most comfortable for you. Once done, place your hands on your chest and then your stomach.

2.) In order to maximize your oxygen intake, you should breathe from your abdomen instead of doing it through your chest. This is also called as belly breathing. Concentrate on your inhalation until you feel that your stomach is starting to rise.

3.) Breathe in and out through your nose. Try to hold your breath for a couple of seconds and then you should exhale through your mouth. Let go of all your thoughts while breathing.

4.) Do at least four to eight breathing cycles, one to three times a day.

Practicing deep breathing is one of the most undemanding, straightforward goals that you can set for yourself. This can be a part of your healthy lifestyle resolution and the good thing is that it will not feel like a punishment, a burden or deprivation.

Stiff Neck – An Underlying Spine Disorder?

Stiff neck causes pain and discomfort when you are trying to move your neck. It is often due to injury to the soft tissues and ligaments at the neck region. It is usually accompanied by pain and soreness in the neck, shoulder and arm. These symptoms can last for quite a fair bit of time and it can be treated using medicine or a warm compress. For cases where the symptoms go away in a couple of days, there is not much of an undercoming issue. Stiff necks can occur when you wake up after having slept in an awkward position for a long time. Sometimes, a stiff neck can be an indication of an underlying spinal disorder.

We must first know the basic anatomy of our neck. Our neck is divided into 2 regions actually the anterior and posterior. There is a part of our spine that moves through our neck and that is the cervical spine which is effectively made up of 7 vertebrae. Any slight problems in our spine can extremely lead to neck pain since they are interlinked. There are 2 common spinal disorders which are Cervical Herniated Disc and Neck Arthritis.

Cervical herniated disc is one of the leading causes for neck pain and indicates an injury to the cervical spine. Pain in the neck is caused by the disc pinching onto the cervical nerve, causing pain to flow down the nerve pathway down to the neck. Some patients may also experience numbness at the neck region.

Another common cause is due to cervical osteoarthritis which is a degenerative joint disease or other known as neck arthritis. Cervical osteoarthritis are characterized by the presence of bone spurs which may impinge onto a nerve. When impingement happens, the pain will radiate down the nerve onto the neck region, creating in neck pain similar to the cervical herniated disc.

It can also be due to cervical spondylosis which is another degenerative disease that is increased by previous injuries. Cervical spondylosis can result in neck pain and stiffness and is due to the wear and tear of the cartilage and bones of the cervical vertebrae.

There are many causes for stiff neck and it could indicate an underlying spinal disorder due to the mechanism for both neck arthritis and cervical herniated disc. The best way would be to seek a doctor immediately if you frequently encounter a stiff neck.

Knee Pain With Running – What to Do About It

Runners today encounter knee problems probably more than any other athlete. Beside football injuries, runners are one of the top athletes that are dealing with knee pain and knee injuries.

As we age we lose cartilage between the knee, known as arthritis. Not everyone encounters it but most people at some point will, as they age.

There are some health conditions that can cause knee pain and knee weakness.

Today with more and more athletes pushing themselves to the limit, the body needs perfect function in order for it to work properly. There are 3 aspects as to why an athlete gets knee pain or develop knee arthritis.

One of the first things we do in our clinic is a bilateral weight distribution. Almost every time I examine a new patient, their weight distribution is off at least 10 pounds or more on one side and as much as 50 pounds to 60 pounds heavy on one side. What causes this? Spinal misalignments. The spinal misalignment can cause increase of nerve function on one side and decrease of nerve function on the opposite side. This also causes muscle spasms in the back, causing the athlete to favor one side. This can develop into more stress and weight being transported on one site of the body.

The second aspect of knee injuries is the muscles in the knee giving way. What can cause weak knee muscles. For one, the body works on the electrical distribution of nerves and acupuncture points. In Chinese medicine, the gallbladder is related to the knee. Now this may seem weird to a lot of people but I am telling you that I have seen countless knee problems fixed once the gallbladder is fixed. The meridians are connected and the muscle called the popliteus can weakened with a sluggish gallbladder. The only real way to find out if you do have a gallbladder issue is if you get real upset with fatty foods and high carbohydrate foods, have upper back pain, and knee pain, especially walking or running downhills.

The last aspect to knee injuries is cartilage tears. Usually when people are deficient in sulfur bearing foods, they can have weak cartilage and weak knees. The cushion between the bones in your knee has to be healthy for your knee to function properly. Usually people that have a hard time digesting minerals and vitamins can have cartilage issues. People need normal amount of enzymes and HCL to digest chicken, meats, and vegetables. Some sulfur rich foods are on and garlic.

To make sure you are balanced, get a friend and two locking scales (commercial scales). Stand on the middle of them, close your eyes and bend your head forward all the way and backwards all the way and then straight up. Once you are still and looking forward, have you friend lock the weight in place. Step off and see your weight distribution. If you are off more than 15 pounds you should see a chiropractor for detailed x-rays of your spell. If you are experiencing the above symptoms for gallbladder dysfunction you can order Beta TCP or you can juice beets, carrots, and spinach daily. This tends to flush the gallbladder out. To make sure your cartilage is healthy, start eating more chicken cartilage, onions, and garlic. Also make sure you take digestive enzymes and betaine hcl. This assures your body is absorbing proper nutrients.

I use these same techniques in my clinic and they work every time.

Now one thing you may want to do, if you are suffering pain is look into class 4 laser therapy for knee pain. This is also called deep tissue laser therapy, not cold laser therapy or low level laser therapy. We use this for knee pain in the clinic and I do not think there is another modality out there today that works almost as good.
